Week 2 - Assignments
Welcome to Week 2. The assignments for the week are listed below. There are seven "must do" assignments and then we have given you a couple of links that are called Just for Fun. Just for Fun activities are optional for you and your family.
After you complete your assignments, please take the quiz. You will find a link to the quiz at the top of the assignments, the bottom of the assignments and in the side menu. Remember that for each week you complete the quiz, a ticket will be entered in the drawing for prizes at the end of the summer. You can earn six prize tickets for the drawing if you do the work and take the quiz each week.
Assignment 1 - Read |
A big "must do" for the Summer Skills Online is to read. We would like you to meet the goal of reading 20 minutes every day or two hours per week in a book of your choosing.
We encourage you to take advantage of the many activities for summer reading being provided by the Mansfield Public Library and the Mansfield School Library staff. Maybe you will like "The Governor's Reading Challenge" or maybe you would like to check out "Books on the Bus" when it comes to your part of town. Here is a link where you can find out more information about the Mansfield School and Public Libraries summer programs:http://www.mansfieldct.gov/content/11150/11154/13601/20206.aspx
However you do it, the quiz questions for this assignment are going to be the same. What are you reading? Did you meet the goal of 20 minutes per day or a total of 2 hours per week? |
This activity is for both students entering Grade 4 and students entering Grade 5 students. It is a review of Spanish vocabulary you have studied. Look at the word cloud. See if you recognize the words. The key to this puzzle is to figure out what is the common theme about all the words you see.
The quiz question is going to ask you what was the common theme or big idea, so be ready!
As each week passes We will post the correct answer to last week's assignment here and talk about it on the blog. If you need a little help looking up Spanish word here is a link to Google Translate where you can look up words - http://translate.google.com/
Assignment 5 - Spelling City
Spelling City is an online program that allows us to review spelling and vocabulary. It has some activities that teachers can use for free and some that are part of their paid service. For Summer Skills Online we will be working with just the FREE activities on this site. Beause we are not using the paid service you do NOT have to login at Spelling City, just follow the links below.
Your task is use the free activities to review the lists, and when you feel you are ready, take the spelling test for the week. The quiz for the week is going to ask you for your score on the spelling test. The goal to shoot for is 80% or better (but remember you can take the test as many tiimes as you want).

Optional Activities - Just For Fun
These activities are just what they say they are. Just for fun! They are not required for the quiz. They are just some links that Mr. Sokoloski and Mrs. Hovorka found that we think are fun and interesting for families to explore together
This week we are sharing two fun activies about raisins:
What you need:
● Fresh red seedless grapes
● Baking tray
● Something to cover the grapes with - you can use kitchen roll, baking paper or a pillowcase
● Sun
How to:
This experiment needs at least 3 days of sunshine, so check the weather forecast before you do it!
1. Wash and gently dry the grapes.
2. Spread the grapes on the baking tray. Make sure the grapes aren't touching each other.
3. Cover the grapes up with kitchen towel or a pillowcase. Make sure whatever you're covering the grapes with won't blow away. You might need to weigh it down.
4. Take the grapes outside and leave them for at least three days. The cover should prevent bugs getting to the grapes. If the nights are damp, take the grapes inside on an evening and put them out again the next day.
After three days you should be ready to eat raisins! What do you notice about the raisins? Are they smaller than the grapes? Are they lighter than the grapes.
Make your fruit dance!
What you need:
● Tall, clear glass
● Raisins
● Fizzy lemonade or any clear carbonated beverage, seltzer water,- it won't work if the lemonade is flat
How to:
1. Gently pour the lemonade into the glass.
2. Add a few raisins and wait for a few seconds.
What's happening? Can you see the raisins moving up and down in the glass?
Experiment with other types of food. Try pasta, popcorn or other fruit. How heavy does something have to be before it won't dance in the lemonade? Make sure you use fizzy lemonade every time!
