The first website for Week 3 is:

 The Exploratorium

Located in San Francisco, California - the museum of science, art and human perception

From the website:

The Exploratorium isn’t just a museum, it’s an ongoing exploration of science, art, and human perception—a vast collection of online interactives, web features, activities, programs and events that feed your curiosity.

We Broke the Science Museum Mold

The Exploratorium was the brainchild of Frank Oppenheimer. At various times, Frank was a professor, a high school teacher, a cattle rancher, and an experimental physicist. While teaching at a university, Frank developed a “library of experiments” that enabled his students to explore scientific phenomena at their own pace, following their own curiosity. Alarmed by the public’s lack of understanding of science and technology, Frank used this model to create the Exploratorium, believing that visitors could learn about natural phenomena and also gain confidence in their ability to understand science, and the world. This was a groundbreaking idea for a science museum in 1969 when the Exploratorium opened. And the rest is history.

We Intertwine Art and Science

Frank Oppenheimer viewed art and science as complementary ways of exploring the world, and incorporated both into the Exploratorium from its earliest days—a pioneering idea at the time that’s been woven into the fabric of the institution. Today, artists and scientists continue to work alongside each other in envisioning new ideas and directions for the museum and its programs. Their common goal: to support a culture of experimentation and collaboration, inspire curiosity and understanding, and stimulate fresh ideas and directions.

For Parents

To your children, you’re many things: provider, teacher, moral compass, cook. We can’t help you with all the roles you play as a parent, but we can offer you lots of ways to engage your child in science, art, and how the world works.

Ocean Life and Ecosystems

Photo Essays

The Ocean Over Time

Evidence shows that life probably began in the ocean at least 3.5 billion years ago with single-celled microbes. In fact, the family tree of every plant and animal alive today is rooted in the ancient ocean. Watch as some of the weird and wondrous life forms of the ancient sea evolve into organisms we know today.

Ocean Science

Everyday, marine scientists representing a wide range of disciplines and institutions conduct research around the globe from beach to open ocean, from surface to seafloor. Their goal is to understand the ocean’s diverse environments and inhabitants and our impact on them. Browse this sampling of pages to meet some of the scientists, watch new tools and technology in action, and tag along for expeditions and experiments.

The Ocean and You

The ocean is essential to all life on Earth. Yet this precious global system is perilously threatened by human activities, and a recent survey by The Ocean Project revealed that 45% of Americans think that “what I do in my life does not impact ocean health much at all."

The five major drivers of ocean change—habitat loss, overfishing, pollution, invasive species, and climate change— can be addressed only if everyone does their part. In this section we provide a starting point for conversations about the issues and the roles we all must play in caring for the ocean, and a place to share the actions we are taking.

Find Your Blue

More than ever, the fate of the ocean is in our hands. To be good stewards and leave a thriving ocean for future generations we need to Find Our Blue - to deepen our personal connections to the ocean. To make changes beyond small wherever we are. To make a positive difference. And to share out passion for the ocean with others. LEARN MORE. DO MORE. FIND YOUR BLUE.
