Week 6- Assignments

Welcome to Week 6. The assignments for the week are listed below. There are seven "must do" assignments and then we have given you a couple of links that are called Just for Fun. Just for Fun activities are optional for you and your family.

After you complete your assignments, please take the quiz. You will find a link to the quiz at the top of the assignments, the bottom of the assignments and in the side menu. Remember that for each week you complete the quiz, a ticket will be entered in the drawing for prizes at the end of the summer. You can earn six prize tickets for the drawing if you do the work and take the quiz each week.

Assignment 1 - Read

A big "must do" for the Summer Skills Online is to read. We would like you to meet the goal of reading 20 minutes every day or two hours per week in a book of your choosing.

We encourage you to take advantage of the many activities for summer reading being provided by the Mansfield Public Library and the Mansfield School Library staff. Maybe you will like "The Governor's Reading Challenge" or maybe you would like to check out "Books on the Bus" when it comes to your part of town. Here is a link where you can find out more information about the Mansfield School and Public Libraries summer programs:http://www.mansfieldct.gov/content/11150/11154/13601/20206.aspx

However you do it, the quiz questions for this assignment are going to be the same. What are you reading? Did you meet the goal of 20 minutes per day or a total of 2 hours per week?

Every parent was emailed a reminder of that user name and password. If you did not get it contact the coordinators.

Your login will take you to a class assignment page. Each week there will be 2-4 skills presented for review. You can use the games section to practice each skill but please finish the week by going to the test section to try to earn Blue Ribbon for each skill.

*Study Island is pretty particular about how Blue Ribbons are earned and if you do not understand how they do it it can become frustrating. Please check out the All About Summer Skills page for more information and a tutorial video.

Optional Activities - Just For Fun

These activities are just what they say they are. Just for fun! They are not required for the quiz. They are just some links that Mr. Sokoloski and Mrs. Hovorka found that we think are fun and interesting for families to explore together.

This week our space agency, NASA,  will be atemptting to land a new "rover" called Curiosity on the surface of our closest planetary neighbor, Mars. We have successfully done this in the past. The pictures and other scientific information the rovers have returned have been just spectacular. It is a tricky landing and it is not at all certain thaey they will succeed. If they do, Curiosity should be sending back pictures this week. Much of the action takes place when we are usually asleep, but if there ever was a time to ask to stay up way past bedtime during summer vacaction, this week is it. Thankfully this will be be big news and be covered on television and in newspapers so you do not have to stay up, but below are a couple of websites where you can follow along online.

The Exporitirium in San Francisco will be doing webcasts all week asn things develop:

NASA's officail site is a great source of information about the Curiosity Mission:
